The e-learning mishap

True story: How I totally enraged my wife over e-Learning!

My wife works in a school as a social pedagogue.

I’m not sure about teachers in other countries, but teachers in Slovenia need to occasionally complete various e-learning courses, mostly to stay compliant (or for God knows what other reason).

These courses are expected to be completed in their free time (read on; it gets even better).

So last weekend, when the rest of the world was watching the Eurovision Song Contest (or doing whatever people normally do on a Saturday evening), she decided to take one of these courses.

Fast forward a few hours later, the day seemed to be over, and I thought we were going to bed. The kids were already sleeping, she was taking a shower, and I was shutting down the lights in the apartment.

As part of this power-saving procedure, I also closed the lid of her laptop.

What a mistake!

As she came back from the bathroom and realised what I had done, she went completely mad and seemed to be only a step away from throwing things at me.

It turned out that her e-learning course was actually a video that had to be played from beginning to end in order to recognize the course as completed.

Shutting the lid reset the whole course, and the video had to be played in its entirety once again.

An e-learning experience from hell.

This is a shout-out to all instructional designers out there: Please don’t do that!

We made up soon enough.

Not all people would have such luck.
