They heavily promote learning at the point of need – not because it’s good for the learners but because it’s good for them.
Not to be misunderstood – I highly appreciate the use of performance support tools at the point of need. But I’m also aware that there are situations employees must be able to handle without looking in the manual. And that’s not only in the field of health and safety.
I often miss some common sense in this debate.
Learning is an ongoing process. Some knowledge and skills can be applied in the flow of work, at the point of need. Some need to be taught and trained in advance.
The best method often depends on the workplace or the type of the organisation. And the L&D professionals should be able to make a qualified decision about which approach is best for each situation.
It shouldn’t be that hard!
