Onboarding pitfalls with e-learning

Matija Hiti, 01/07/2024

My friend recently started a new job at a large web workshop.

Her first week was a nightmare.

On her first day, she was put in front of a computer with a list of links pointing to different training materials.

Instead of meeting new co-workers and learning about her new job, she spent half of her day going through company policies, watching videos, and completing one test.

She spent the rest of her day checking news websites, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Day two was hardly any better.

On day three, she wanted to talk with her manager about her work, but her manager was apparently too busy. The rest of the team seemed busy too – however, no one cared to assign her any work.
Long story short – the situation eventually improved. She’s been given her first tasks and is beginning to like the environment, her team, and enjoying her work.

But there’s still some bad taste left.

All the e-learning from the first day could have been assigned to her way before she started her position. By the time she’d come to work, that could have been already finished.

On her first day, she could have been welcomed as a human being, acquainted with the team, and already received her first assignments.
It would’ve been a win-win situation!

The key takeaway? E-learning can be great! But it can also cause a lot of frustration. Know how to use it and when to use it!
